Abstract

This article is intended to examine Clifford Geertz's thoughts on the anthropological approach used in Islamic studies. Whether we admit it or not, the emergence of Islamic studies as an academic study cannot be separated from the enthusiasm of Westerners such as Clifford Geertz. This research uses a qualitative approach and type of library research. Data was collected using documentation techniques and then analyzed using content analysis techniques. The research results show that culture is formed by religion, so it is very possible for religions, including Islam, to be studied using an anthropological approach. Clifford Geertz revealed that being able to study Islam from an anthropological perspective can be done by studying the various symbols used by Muslims. The symbol is then interpreted through thinking activities along with observing various behaviors displayed by Muslims based on the symbol. It can be said that every symbol has a meaning and the meaning will be abstracted into behavior.
